"The head of NASA says that in 10 years, 25% of the American population will have access to the Skycar. And he also says that in 25 years 90% of people will be using them," Mr Moller told BBC News Online.

But would-be customers will need a chunk of change to hit the skyway. The initial cost is estimated to be about $500,000 - but with fuel consumption of 20 miles to the gallon, it's almost eco-friendly compared to gas-guzzling four-wheel drives.

    Fictional character biogrpahy

Born in Callander, Scotland, Destro’s full name is James McCullen Destro XXIV, and is Laird of Castle Destro in the Scottish Highlands. The Destro clan has designed and sold weapons for centuries, and Destro is the head of their current incarnation: M.A.R.S. (Military Armament Research Syndicate). He wears a mask forged from Beryllium Steel, a tradition dating back to the English Civil War, when an ancestor of his was caught selling weapons to both sides. Forced to wear a steel mask for his crimes (neither side wanted to execute the ancestor because they still wanted the weapons he sold), the Destro clan has since turned it into a symbol of pride, passing it down from father to son for over 20 generations.

    also this is amazing:
John F. Kennedy appeared in Action Comics #309 in 1963, when he helped protect Clark Kent's secret identity.

"If I can't trust the president of the United States, who can I trust?" Superman tells Kennedy.

That issue appeared a week after Kennedy was assassinated. DC Comics had to explain later that it was too late to recall the book.

    no, it doesn't really.
  •  » quote
  • i mean, for portable devices, on screen keyboards can be damn handy.

but on your computer? yeahhhhh there's a lot of reasons that would suck.
  •  » quote
  • no way. once people got used to them it could rule. I've been wierded out by every consecutively newer slimmer lower profile keyboard since my 1st PC jr. but you get used to them. like, I HATED the tap click thing forever til I got my new macbook and now I get pissed when I'm on some old comp and actually have to click a button or actually look for a scrollbar... forget about typing... think about the control options for things like games and music apps. keyboard becomes a mixing board, swipe it to the side and "manually" adjust effects etc.
  •  » quote

forget about typing, on a keyboard? yeah, that's still the main use of the things. and will be for a looooong time. the other things you mention are secondary and can be done just as well without introducing the whole host issues a touch keyboard would bring, from ergonomics to the significantly reduced speed and accuracy without any tactile feedback. not to mention, if the keyboard is a screen, your hands are going to be in the way most of the time.

if, instead, you take the existing screen and make it touch (like HP has done), you end up with other ergonomic problems, and the fact that the interfaces aren't intended to be manipulated with fingers, but with cursors that have 1px x 1 px accuracy.

just did. looks really neat, and is fairly slick, but it has problems.

its awkward and pretty inaccurate unless you're precisely on.
it is impossible to spell out custom words without using it as a regular keyboard, which it sucks as.
in response to "you can't see through your finger" they say "you'll get used to it", which is a horrible answer. what about a loupe, or expanding keys like the regular keyboard? apparently, they don't care to think about that.

i'll say the same thing about shapewriter that I said about Skype in 2004: only nerds are going to like this. flash in the pan. not going anywhere.

touch screens are plenty accurate. your fingertip isn't. they will never have the same feel as typing on a keyboard, and there's no way to type as fast without that.

these things aren't going to change.

what needs to change is the basic interface philosophy, to leave behind the leftover constraints of small low-resolution displays. shift from interfaces that work with precise mouse input to ones that work with sloppy fingers.

this has been possible in mobile devices that have been created from scratch, but trying to change the direction of a decades-old operating system? that's going to take a long time.

well it'll definitely take long time if all developers think the way you do. Dude, break out one of those old springy clicky keyboards and imagine how you would've reacted if someone proposed one of the new mac keyboards. If everyone thought like you, we'd still have the pencil eraser nubs instead of trackpads.

the developers don't, its the users that do.

trackpads were accepted over nubs because they were easier. something like shapeways isn't easier. someone picks it up the first time, tries it, goes "meh" and goes back to what they know.

that's why the iPhone has done so well, people pick it up and just start poking around. they pick up a blackberry and go "meh".

Ever since Rooster and Trish, the Neverending Story Van owners and frequent threateners of lawsuits against FilmDrunk, walked out of my life, there’s been a hole in my heart that booze and public masturbation just couldn’t fill. But they say Jesus works in mysterious ways, and in my search for something that would remind me them, I found this, the quintessential Star Wars-themed rape van. All other Star Wars rape vans must kneel in the presence of this one. It may never come close to what Rooster and Trish and I shared, but I did come up with these van-related movie quotes:

    “Run, kids. IT’S A TRAP!”

    “Game over, van, game over!”

“Now DAT’S how you sposta rape van!”

this reminds me of a joke I've probably told here before. a guy is losing a ton of weight, goes to the doctor and the doc tells him he has worms. doc says, each day at 8am stick an egg and a small piece of matzoh up your ass. after 5 days, come back here before 8am on the 6th day.

so the guy sticks egg and matzoh up his ass for 5 days, and he's still losing weight and getting angrier and angrier each day at having to stuff the food up his pooper hole.

on the 6th day he goes to the doctor, ready to give him a piece of his mind. the doctor sees the guy is angry, and tells him to relax and bend over. the doctor sticks an egg up the guy's ass, and the guy is like, I've been doing this all week and it's not working! the doc says hold on a sec. just then the worm sticks his head out and says "hey, where's my fucking matzoh!" and the doctor grabs the worm by the head and yanks him out.

  • Those quotes are from the near novel-length screeds that Sim started putting at the end of each book.

  • I don't know if it ever actually affected the content of the comic. I've never read it. I learned about Sim's woman-hating and decided I wasn't going to read them.

  • i just remember some public controversy between him and Scott McCloud or something, but don't recall the details.

  • All I got out of that research, I already knew: a) women want to be raped by rich, muscular, handsome doctors b) women are completely self-absorbed and, thus, see themselves in everything around them and c) feminism is no different from communism in that all of its literature is founded upon convoluted syntax, bafflegab and academic jargon which paints a false (albeit attractive) picture of an unattainable utopia which can be achieved – easily! – by everyone in the world simply and simultaneously (in both feminist and communist literature the “crux point” is invariable) changing their basic nature overnight.

  • man this thing is unreal. His first paragraph asserts that feminism is entirely without any intellectual foundation, and then cites as his own "research" a series of interviews he did with women and his vague assumptions about them. SOLID INTELLECTUAL FOUNDATION, BRAH
