Sunday Candlelight Memorial for Craig Murphey (3885 views)

  • Hello everyone,

Thank you to everyone who came and participated in the ride and placement of the ghostbike. Pete came to our apartment yesterday and picked up Craig's old blue schwinn to use as the memorial, so it's actually his bike there- which feels comforting somehow.

This evening, Sunday Oct 21st we will meet at 9pm in Macri Park.
I picked up some candles last night and I have about 72, I hope I run out and need more. If you bring your own candle, please try to get one that isn't the glass kind so we don't have to worry about it breaking/going out. I can't tell you how much I hope for a large turnout. If there was one thing Craig loved, it was his friends. Being around a great number of them would make him so happy. Please tell everyone you know who knew Craig or even those who didn't to join us.

So we will meet at 9 and distribute candles and walk up to Ten Eyck and Union together. If anyone has a car with a stereo or a portable boom box to lend so we can blast one of his favorite songs, please let me know.

If you have questions, my number is 646 479-7294.
I know we all loved him, and I hope this night will be a way to say goodbye for those who can't make it up to Franklin. Please, please be there tonight. Thanks.

  • for the candles, i got paper dixie cups and punched a hole out of the bottom, then pushed a white candle (sabbath candle from the grocery store) through the hole. that way the wind hopefully won't blow the candles out. hope that helps.

  • what is the dress for this? i imagine suits and dresses?
  •  » quote
  • well, being that Craig's opinion of "dressed up" was wearing a button down shirt over his dirty old t-shirt and unrolling the bottoms of his jeans...
    dress however you want.

  • Les and I just bought a couple dozen more candles. Let's make that corner visible from deep space

  • God this is so sad. I was so so glad and grateful to Lyssa and everyone that organized this as a celebration to remember the great life Craig led and the amazing person he was, rather than wallow in the pain. It's so hard to think of how senseless this tragedy is and how it should have been avoided. At the same time it's really incredible the way people have pulled together since this happened. I feel grateful that it's happening and I hope he sees this from wherever he is now and how extremely loved he was.

  • When Lyssa was saying later on that people who were coming to Franklin should wear whatever they felt comfortable with (i don't remember exactly, but it was something like "come in jeans, come in a shirt, whatever you're comfortable with"), I came THIS CLOSE to adding "COME IN YOUR BOXERS!"

    oh well :)

  • Hello:

My name is Greg Hanlon and I'm a reporter for the Williamsburg Courier newspaper.

I wanted to put together something about Craig for our upcoming issue. From what I've heard from a lot of you, he was a really amazing guy. If any of you want to share your thoughts about Craig, please email me at greg.hanlon@gmail.com or call me at 646-352-2659.

Also, I understand that a lot of you are skeptical about the police report, specifically the part that said he was going southbound in the northbound lane. I would like to hear more about this -- call or email me and we can talk.

One more thing: I was at the event Saturday night, but I couldn't make it on Sunday night. Do any of you have any photos you can maybe send me from the event? And any photos of Craig that can be used for the paper, perhaps? That would be very helpful to me.

Thank you all very much, and I'm terribly sorry for your loss.

  • it was really amazing. I mean it was if all of Williamsburg poured out on the streets and came out. Perfect amount of solemn and funny. It was done up well. my hat really goes off to Lyssa she is strong in ways I am not.

  • lyssa thank you so much for all of your strength and courage in organizing this beautiful memorial.

it was truly overwhelming to see the outpourings of love and to see the sheer amount of friends of craig who were able to gather together.

i loved all of the stories -- please never stop telling them!

  • I hate that I was out of town for this. If there are any more events, I will surely be there.

  • this looks beautiful, I can't wait for photos.

I was really hoping to make it too (I was sort of fighting off going to the hospital until afterwards, but common sense took over)...my thoughts are with all of you.

yeah, i have never laughed out loud during a memorial or anything before. this was gone about just really perfectly. leave it to craig murphey to take a pee-slap in stride.

  • i didn't come on here to post earlier because i was worried it would somehow not be a fit tribute, when so many people that post on here loved him so much. i do not know if there is a better tribute to pay to someone that was so much devoted to his friends and to his community that an entire neighborhood mourned him, than what you guys did for him.

  • i missed the sunday night memorial and so went there last night to re-light all the candles and sit. the words and photos you all posted were so touching and full of personality. even random passersby were drawn in, everyone from latin grandmothers to a homeless guy who sleeps in the nearby bakery. the ghostbikes are so provocative; i can't imagine a better memorial... cheers to you all.

  •  » quote
  • my coworker has a copy of that metro issue... it's one of the ones of everyone raising their candles, you're taking the shot from near the front tire of the ghostbike. There's an inset of craig's face from that photo of him in the park with his arms kinda folded on his knees (the one used on streetsblog)

  • Hi guys, I'm not from NYC but from Mass. I've been friends with Craig since we were teenagers. I just wanted to say thank you from his Mass friends for taking such good care of him and for loving him like you love him. What you guys have done with this vigil is amazing; the pictures have me crying all over again. He was, and is, the most amazing person I've ever known. We're all better people for having known Craig. Thanks again.

  • somebody scan and post that metro article.
