If you were there and you didn't steal a bike, wallet, passport, and coat, you might still be a piece of shit (who knows?). But if you know who did or saw anything suspicious, please let this dude know because losing all that shit totally sucks:

  • Hello Williamsboard,

Just made it through all of the comments here. Thanks guys, I do think talking about and even making fun of this video is semi-productive in eventually getting this video infront of the thief who I think will hear the kind of creepy but slightly profound message at the end and will act on his better instincts. But we have to all want it. Does anyone here want the story to end with me getting that stuff back? That would be incredible right? So pass the video along, make fun of it if while you spread it around, seriously, we can make history here.

And since you guys took the time to bring up certain questions, I though I should take the time to provide as much insight as I can.

    Thomas,
I was not wearing skinny jeans. Slacks. I carry the credit cards so I can take them to the bank if I need to make a payment and because I can sometimes spend a very tiny amount on them. Also your 700 microphone is better then my KSM27 [www.bhphotovideo.com] which I bought for 300 4 years ago and has treated me pretty well. I can see in your video [www.youtube.com]you have a slightly larger and longer microphone.

To Staples and everyone else who thinks it was "incredibly stupid to carry my passport around with me," I don't have a drivers license. But in the future, I'll take the advice and try to get another less important form of ID to keep on me. But I generally don't like to be ruled by caution.

    Transmigrant,
Not sure how you know, but yes, I didn't have the key to the lock because Susan had borrowed my keys on accident and left town with them for the weekend.
*Upon reading further down I just realized you are Trevor. Thanks for that video recorder, I've used it a tone. But yes, it's gone, for now.

    Roxy,
    Thanks for the luv!

To everyone who hated the video,
Which seems like pretty much everyone here, the good thing about anyone being able to make anything in the internet is that nobody has to look at anything they don't find relevant to themselves. Also I make videos in all kinds of styles. I don't think I've every really done the style of this video before but there is no gaurentee I won't do it again. So it's a risky game to look at anything I make because I'm not afraid of using video to just talk about some stolen goods and a little philosophy on life. So now you've been warned, be careful to not subscribe to my video channel.

    aVENGINGDISCOMODFATHEr,
I thought it was funny you said, "the new buddhism". Take a look at couchsurfing.com. Thats a site that uses kind of a digital karma to create enough trust to let strangers come and stay on your couch. I've hosted over 20 people at my place and everyone that comes here says the reason they trust the site is because they can see so much information about the people and who has given them referrals. This is how more and more of the internet and all of life will become. Thats what I was trying to convey in the video.

    Mrs.Blass
That article talking about media moguls came out over a year ago and wasn't about economic success, it was about having done will with videos on the internet. We were also profiled in fast company magazine 6 months earlier in which the interviewer wrote about us eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches creating the joke that we had certain insights into creating new media but that we were still broke. But I don't being broke, it's not really a goal of mine to have money, I try to get other things done and know that money flies out of the word work at a steady enough pass for me to not die and with out needing a job so I plane to continue that.

    MarkersMarkII,
Your hatred cracked me up with "I hate this person with the fire of 1000 of his own herpes sores". But in terms of carrying 30 credit cards, okay now you are are inventing. I was carrying around 5 or so. Also in terms of the budget for Four Eyed Monsters, we get that question all the time. We actually didn't spend any money on the film, so you are right, but we worked on it for ever and committed our full time lives with no jobs to making and promote the film and our online video podcast. Thats what racked up the debt. Not working. I know it's nobody else;s problems but our own, and it doesn't bother me that much anymore, but I believe in transparency, so I'm not afraid to let people know exactly what I've put into something they are watching. Thats why we hold up the credit cards in the intro to the film.

    666 SKULLS,
In terms of Macrobiotics, I wasn't trying to boast, just fired off a quick flickr description and mentioned the macrobiotics because I'm compiling a bunch of material for a documentary on food and want to be able to search my photos for related images to possibly use in the video. I don't consider my flickr feed an entertainment feed, more of just a tool to keep all my photos online so I can get to them and I don't put much thought into the descriptions there. But I've been eating macrobiotic-ally for about 5 months and am into it and would gladly cook a meal for anyone else interested in possibly taking up macrobiotics. Just get in touch.

    Joe_p,
"look left, look right, look forward, switch microphone hands." Good point, I did make a point to do all those things. Mainly because I was trying to pack in a lot of ideas and information. Also I'm a big fan of certain monologues, Network, Adaptation and a few good men are some of the films I think have some pretty awesome monologues. I know I'm not a natural when it comes to public speaking, so I've been working hard at getting better by having taken acting classes for a while, done a bunch of Q&A sessions about Four Eyed Monsters and lately have been asked to speak a lot about the internet and film making at conferences. I would like to get as good as I can at all forms of communication because thats sort of what I look at film making as, bringing it all together. So I consider even just a simple video trying to track down my bike also a film making sketch in it's own experimental way trying to explore all types of different voices.

Thats it everyone, have a nice night, I'll try to check back later in case there are any leads on the coat and bike or any more questions.

    Arin

Today in Brooklyn a man was beaten to death with a baseball bat by another man who claimed he was upset by comments left on an internet messageboard. The slain man allegedly made bombastic comments and slanders at a local filmmaker who had his jacket and bicycle stolen at a party in early 2008. The comments were said to enrage the attacker to the point of planning the attack months in advance in anticipation of a visit to New York by the victim who lives in Seattle. Upon exiting the the L train at Bedford Ave, the attacker sprung from his lean to where he had been living for months on a sparse diet of juice boxes and raisins. In a flurry or bat swings not unlike Barry Bonds, the attacker demolished the hea of the victim quickly. Witnesses report that the attacker then said "THAT'LL TEACH U TO MAKE FUN OF PEOPLE GETTING THEIR BIKE STOLEN ON THE INTERNET!" before fleeing back to his lean to.

  • i heard that people were hating-on/blaming Arin over here, so i came over to weigh in, but after reading a long string, i can see that it's really only 2 or 3 dumb-asses that most people probably have the good sense to ignore.

we've had lots of parties at the loft (i've lived there for 2 years), and with exception of the Sparks party where some idiots (probably Thomas, MakersMark & co.) showed up and broke some of shit, we've never had an incident. its always been a great vibe of friends and friends of friends having a fun dance party.

it wasnt like a sketchy bar or something, and i think Arin, like a lot people, wants to live in a world where you can take your coat off at a friends house and set it in the pile of everyone else's coats, and then pick the fucker up at the end of the night, like everyone else. And again, this is the first time in dozens of parties that something like this has happened.

It would be/will be wonderful to see if, instead of feeling the need to separate themselves from the victim and find ways to blame the victim, communities like this one, band together and say, "no, its not cool to be a prick and thief. we dont want it in our scene."

The first step, of course, is ignoring people like Thomas and MakersMark.

thanks for your time, and huge thanks to Veebs for posting this,

what is also interesting is the fact that went into debt not because of the cost of producing your film, but because you weren't working a real job while you were doing it, thus racking up a tremendous credit card debt (rent? groceries? metrocards? jamba juice?) i can't believe you've amassed much sympathy and so many donations after learning that. i know many artists that manage to both work and create. i know i certainly try to.

I'd actually be interested in hearing Arins opinion on the Writers Guild Strike, being that he is a New Media king and all (I'm not being sarcastic)

    Hey Thomas,

So I checked out your music, listened to all your songs. Nice work. In response to your question about the Writers Strike, here is what I'd like to see as a result of the strike. I called for this in a video posted just before the strike began. [youtube.com]

We are in a time where writers can completely leave their positions if they want to. Then write their own content using small digital video crews to produce low cost shows to self-release online. Blip.tv [blip.tv], Brightcove, Revver and youtube's content partner program all provide ad revenue and are looking for well written content. So thats the real strike in my mind. At that point a creator of a show can write what truly inspires them rather then being confined by the parameters of a mainstream show. Plus instead of 4 percent they'll be getting 100 percent.

Also it would be cool if then audiences jumped on board and could actually "boycott" mainstream media by simply not watching it and instead subscribing free to shows they like and getting them free on what ever device they want to watch them on. Now and then there would be a thanks to a sponsor or some kind of ad model that gets the creators paid but it wouldn't need to be nearly as obtrusive as annoying 30 second spots.

Even right now there is enough independent media out there to not have a TV and to do screenings of independent films at friends houses rather going to movie theaters. So I imagine this will only get more and more practical as things like the writers strike pull us into a new era.

  • Okay guys,
I made it through the recent batch of comments, I've been scouring for leads on the missing coat and bike and don't have any at the moment. I also checked out what's going on at gawker which I don't think I'll have time to respond to but I did have a few laughs over there at some of the comments.

    Makers Mark II,
About being on "gawkered". Four Eyed Monsters [foureyedmonsters.com] has had over 1 million views on YouTube, MySpace and Stage6.com so it's really not much of a goal of mine to get an unrelated video blogged about in order to attract more interest in the film I did. Also about the shirts, it's funny to see people shocked about that because I didn't think twice. At our second film festival we started ironing on our graphics to shirts to get the word out. Then people loved them and we opened up a cafepress store and after realizing their quality sucked we screen printed up 1000 shirts at Design Station [designstation.net] here in town. They've actually sold really well and just made another batch this summer off our films online store. [foureyedmonsters.com]

    Thomas,
About Andy Kaufman, I think he is a genius. Also per your question about the writers strike, I also posted my answer [arincrumley.com]on my blog and linked to your music [myspace.com] and williamsboard.com as well.

    Sneaky Flutes,
One clarification. I don't really have an ambition to "manage a job and create". My ambition is to follow what ever path I need to explore at a particular moment which for the past few years had been Four Eyed Monsters which was all consuming by it's nature of turning real life into film. Now I'm evolving and looking into all sorts of other areas of interest. So that is my personally assigned "job" and I do get money now after having jumped off the cliff and borrowed from my future using credit cards. We sell DVDs, shirts, downloads and get sponsored. One thing we rarely get though is donations. Thats because we don't ask for that. We do have a button our site if someone wants to do that, but when we made 55,000 dollars putting our entire film up on YouTube, that was via sponsorship and none of the people watching the movie were required to pay or donate. But in terms of the debt we still have, I look at it as no different then student loans and have lined up a skeme to pay everything off well before this year is over with out having to compromise how I spend me time. I actually post all the time on my blog about ways more people can not have to manage a real job and can simply follow their inspired path.

    B Rabbit,
No, I didn't go to SVA. I didn't go to college. In fact I dropped out of high school 1 month before graduation because I had some unites that failed to transfer and I saw no point to the bureaucracy of fixing the situation. In a recent blog [arincrumley.com] I conversed with an online friend about the question of college vs no college. I personally am a fan of independent study.

Thanks to those who have passed the video around, I sincerely plan to have this stuff material in my possession soon.

As if any writer would prefer to have their content on fucking youtube as opposed to network television.

finally, we live in a world where writers are free from the tyranny of $50,000/week paychecks and can upload shitty 2-minute videos to Revver.com, where they stand to make literally TENS of dollars!

    Thomas,
About Andy Kaufman, I think he is a genius. Also per your question about the writers strike, I also posted my answer [arincrumley.com]on my blog and linked to your music [myspace.com] and williamsboard.com as well.

    ZOMG THOMAS YOU FAMOUS.

  • ok in all fairness, i just watched 4 eyed monsters. all of it. i give it a hearty thumbs up. not only because i am always impressed by those who have the motivation and tenacity to pursue creative endeavors but also because this is an interesting film with many effective devices. the exploration of alternative types of communication and their effect on relationships is an interesting topic and this film manages to be provocative and relative. kudos to you sir.

Re: The Writers Guild Strike, while I do agree that it is actually possible(for the first time in history) in 2008 for an independent feature or show to be entirely produced, written and filmed by a small crew, there isn't going to be a change from the large productions we see now. I work in the film business as a grip (my union is IATSE Local 52) and before the strike I was working on Gossip Girl. There are over 100 people on that one show alone that are out of work due to the strike. From Actors/Directors to Production Assistants, Grips, Electrics, Set Dressers, Props, Scenic Artists, Accountants, Catering, the people who maintain the studios. IT's a ridiculous amount of people, teamwork and effort that goes into making the show.

I personally believed in the writers at first but it got to the point where you could tell they were overreaching. I hope an outcome is reached soon(according to my google news alerts on 'writers guild strike' there is a 'hopeful optimism' in the air for it to be settled before the oscars)

  • Arin can you please explain the spelling of yr name?
  •  » quote
  • Makers Mark,
My birth certificate actually says "Erin M. Crumley" which is the irish way of spelling the name. Plus my Dads name is Eric, which was partial inspiration for my mom as well. On the first day of school in 3rd grade my teacher was doing roll call and got to my name and I gleefully said, "here." She thought I was trying to be a class clown and didn't think I was really Erin so she said in front of the class that "Erin with an E is a girls name." The class loved that and erupted in laughter.

There was someone else named the standard Aaron so I didn't feel I could change my name to that. So I carved in my dresser at home "A R I N" with a knife and said to myself, "this is my new name." It really pissed my mom off and she only recently decided to honor that as the official spelling my name. But I never did a real name change, it's just that I've been spelling it that way for so long so every bank account, school, tax forms and even my passport spells it that way even though my actual birth certificate still reads "Erin."
