I have no clue what all that technical stuff means. Eek. I guess I should educate myself before I make a purchase.

Basically: a new one of similar storage and memory is $300+ more than I'm asking. I think its a fair price. Its a fast machine that can burn DVDs and can hold lots of music and pictures.

it also comes with leopard (of course), cs3 design premium, iwork 08, ilife 08, etc.

i think that pretty much all modern powerbooks topped out at 2 gigs of ram, the more you have the better.

but in the end, its still almost 4 years old in an industry that double in speed every year and a half, ya know? (this post coming to you from a iBook G4 c. 2005)
  •  » quote
  • yeah, totally. I wasn't sure if there were any disk clean ups or anything of that nature that may help speed it up.

I plan on buying a new one next spring so I'm not looking to put any money into this one.

right now: 1gb of ram and 18.6gb free on the HD.

I'm definitely going with 4gbs of ram and a 7200 rpm HD on my next laptop.

making a duplicate copy is a common way to back up. it has the advantage that you can boot from it, migrate data out of it into a system, etc. disadvantage is that you have only one snapshot.

regardless, easiest thing for a single computer: time machine. just plug it in and let it do its thing.

    ~$600-750 ballpark.

The cheapest way to get one would be to try and buy an identical machine with a broken display or some other non-MLB damage and strip it.

If you've got $129 you can spare for a few minutes, walk into the store and buy a battery. Leave, swap them (put the old busted one back in the box), and go return it.

We used to do that all the time to take care of customers who couldn't get an appointment and stuff, swapping power adapters, batteries, chargers, cases... but they kinda clamped down on it. So just do it yourself.

    Here's my specs:
    Model Name: Power Mac G5
    Model Identifier: PowerMac7,3
    Processor Name: PowerPC G5 (3.0)
    Processor Speed: 2 GHz
    Number Of CPUs: 2
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
    Memory: 6 GB
    Bus Speed: 1 GHz
    Boot ROM Version: 5.1.8f7

I've tried booting to my Tiger disc and it won't do that either. Do macs have some kind of weird c-mos thing that I'm not aware of? How do i get this thing to go?
  •  » quote
  • when it comes to the grey screen, does the Apple logo appear? does the spinner appear beneath the Apple logo? does it keep spinning forever, or does it spin, then freeze?

anyway, might as well start with...

reset pram - hold apple-option-p-r immediately after pressing the power button, until it chimes a 3rd time

reset open firmware hold apple-option-o-f immediately after pressing the power button, until it dumps you to a grey screen with white text. type reset-nvram and press return. type reset-all and press return. the machine should reboot.
  •  » quote
  • The apple logo is on the gray screen and theres a spinner under the apple logo that keeps spinning forever.

  • neither of those seemed to change anything.

  • if its getting to the spinner, and not freezing, its hopefully just the software. could be the hard drive too.

try booting into Open Firmware again (apple-option-o-f), insert your install disc, type "multi-boot" and press enter, and let me know what happens.

Whoever is on the other end can hear AND see me just fine.

This problem is occurring through both AIM and Jabber, and half-a-dozen people with both protocols have been tested with.

I have already tried moving which ports AIM is communicating on, I have deleted/recreated any relevant plists, I have deleted my account and re-added it, ensured that ingress settings weren't suddenly changed on my router, all to no avail. Anyone have any ideas? This problem started about a week ago for no discernible reason. I assumed it was just a glitch and would go away the next time I rebooted the machine, but it hasn't.

  • okay, i think i narrowed it down to it definitely being a problem with the hard drive.
    1. i plugged in a thumb drive and my computer acknowledged it just fine.
    2. i plugged in my damn mbox and that worked. the mbox and the hd use the same kind of cable and i tried plugging in the mbox with the hd's cable and vice versa. in the first instance, the mbox still worked and when i plugged in the hard drive with the mbox's cable, it still didn't show up. so it's definitely the hard drive. luckily, everything on it is backed up, so whatever.

my NEW question is: i am kind of new to Macs, and mine is currently being kind of sluggish. with my PC, there was all sorts of little bullshit tricks you could do to optimize performance, but i don't know what any of them are for a mac. so is there like, a disk defrag or that sort of thing?

AppleCare for a MacBook Pro is $349 ($239 edu). Technically, once the damage is noticed and in the system, AppleCare is pretty much out the window. Sometimes, Geniuses or repair depot techs will fix other things under the plan in spite of the damage, but its a slim chance.

plug power and the monitor into the laptop, turn it on, close the lid, plug in a keyboard and mouse, boom, ready to go on the external display.

if the dell has dvi, use that, straight into the mbp. if it only has vga, use the adapter.

Do I have to use the Apple-built Time Machine backup drive? Or can I use the software to back up my shit on a third-party external HD?

Any external drive formatted as HFS+ (Extended) will work great for Time Machine. You can also back up via Time Machine to an AFP share of a drive hosted by a Leopard machine.

a Time Capsule is a way to do network-based backups without another computer, but it is notoriously buggy and problematic. it is the only way to do a network-based backup via Time Machine without another computer.

Current-generation Time Capsules also support simultaneous dual band 802.11n. They'll broadcast separate networks on 2.4GHz and 5GHz, so the low speed stuff doesn't interfere with newer, 5GHz equipment. They come in three sizes: 2TB [bit.ly] » , 1TB [bit.ly] » , and 500GB [bit.ly] » . Also, MacMall has the old 500gb [bit.ly] » model, which can do only one network at a time, for a steep discount.

so its not a hardware issue, but something's f'd up. if its an iMac G4 or G5 then you can try resetting the open firmware, too. intel macs don't have OF.

did a little digging, and it looks like the most common solution is in fact the trusty archive and install, so dig up those install discs and then spend half a day downloading updates :p

You'd have to get just the right drive for it to work, there's a pretty specific adapter board in there that connects to the MLB on one end, and the drive on the other. Service parts are almost always $TEXAS.

It would probably be easier or cheaper to find a disk image of the retail installer for the OS you have, and load it onto an external hard drive.

it can help to get an idea of how old a refurb machine is, if you catch it at the wrong time, you could end up with a refurb model a couple generations back.
  •  » quote
  • ohhh ok. so it said buy now on the macbook pros. and i know they are fairly new. i'm assuming that means to buy a new one as opposed to a referb? or the other way around.

i'm not sure what model that refurb is, I haven't been paying attention to them very closely.

if, for example, you were to check the buyer's guide just after a new one was released, it would say its a good time to buy, but it is possible a refurb would be 2 generations old--previous to the model just replaced. that would be a bad thing, imho.

  •  » quote
  • anything you get new or refurb from apple is going to be a solid machine for a good while, like your g4 has been (hopefully)

the main thing you'd run into is that they probably wouldn't lower the pricing on a refurb when they lower the price on the discontinued model, so you'd be paying the same as a new one. they tend to take a while to adjust prices like that.
  •  » quote
  • gotcha. i feel like it's not that much less with the 10% discount i have, once i get apple care which is a lot! 300 bucks?! so i might as well spend the extra few hundred and get a new one. right?

  • Click on "show duplicates" and then delete every other song. It's not the most efficient way, but it beats going through the whole library. This will only show the half of it that doubled up.

  • No problem. There's a script you can download and run to do it automatically, but unless the tracks are named identically, it doesn't work. Since most often when you import something and it duplicates, a "1" is added at the end, it's not too effective.

Did you pull this one straight from the shitty phone customer service handbook? Things just break all the time, usually due to poor manufacturing or sub par materials. Like the shitty power supplies they paired with ibooks and powerbooks. I know you love apple and all but you should hold off on building that alter.

  •  » quote
  • a shitty power supply has lots more failure points and failure modes from regular use, look how they usually fail. one of the most common ways is fraying due to insufficient strain relief.

your headphone jack is not subject to any forces other than the insertion and removal of the headphones, and if there was really a design issue with it (like there was with, say, the cracking macbook handrests), random failures would be a lot more common.

i'm sorry, but I don't think your headphone jack just broke on its own.
