women, at 5' start at 100 lbs. for every inch over 5' add 5 lbs.
for instance, at 5'5, i can be a healthy weight at 125.

men, at 5' start at 105 lbs. for every inch over 5' add 6 lbs.

People at my office were actually planning a sit-down to discuss my "weight issue" until I explained to them what I was eating and whatnot. My best friend is 5'4 and weighs 110 and people think we're the same size (people usually guess she's about 15 lbs heavier and I'm about 10-15 lbs lighter.) Its all about how you carry it and your muscle and all that- she actually has a higher bodyfat % than I do even though I weigh 25+ lbs more than her.

So what I'm SAYING is that shooting for something to fit better might be a better goal than shooting for an actual number, especially because it can become really obsessive to try to hit a weight that your body doesn't naturally want.

As for fish/proteins, I really like keeping frozen shrimp around. Its healthy and takes 10 minutes to prepare. I defrost it (run cold water over the shrimp) and then sautee them with some combination of the following: garlic, white wine, a small amount of olive oil, shallots, broccoli (or whatever veggie is on hand), lemon, rosemary or whatever fresh herbs are available (I chop the herbs with the garlic so the flavors infuse a little more). Shrimp is relatively high in cholesterol but low in calories/fat.

technically, pull ups and chin ups are supposed to exercise almost the same muscles. the problem is that most people don't do either of them correctly. the main muscle used in pull ups should be your lats. this should be followed up by various muscles in the upper back, shoulders and neck. while you do use your biceps, the load should mostly be held by other muscles.

you can google it to find correct form for them, but off of the top of my head you should arch your back and point your shoulder blades, then pull up at the elbow instead of the wrist. you shouldn't have to wrench the bar if you're doing them correctly.

pull ups and chin ups are awesome and hit a ton of muscles. i like to do them with a neutral or mixed grip to mix it up.
  •  » quote

i get this too.. i'm a light eater during the day.. like.. a coffee and a yogurt. and as soon as i started going to the gym it was coffee, yogurt, banana, sandwich.

i almost felt counterproductive because i was burning more but then eating more. but i figured my body probably needed it.

So...when this thread came into existence I decided I wanted to loose 15 lbs during the contest (its officially done at the end of april, right?). It totally motivated me to work out smarter, keep a better eye on portion size/caloric breakdown, and completely cut out unnecessary calories (mostly booze related but also anything with high fructose corn syrup).

and while I'm certainly no expert, the best advice I can give is to get rid of your old clothes when they get too big. as you get older you get curvier.. being in a high school weight is not gonna be healthy. i would say tone muscle if you wanna tone, but trying to lose 8 more lbs from what your at--you don't need to lose anything.

i weighed 117 when i was 20/21 and i DO NOT need to weigh that little again. i'd rather be 125 and just toned with an actual butt.
  •  » quote

1 pound of muscle = 1 pound of fat

    but, regarding density:

Muscle density is 1.06 g/ml and fat density is (about) 0.9
g/ml. Thus, one liter of muscle would weight 1.06 kg and one liter of
fat would weight 0.9 kg. In other words, muscle is about 18% denser
    than fat.

"A corollary to this is that you may gain weight due to lifting
weights, even while loosing fat weight. This is one of the greatest
exercise myths. The myth is based in fact: muscle is more dense and
weighs more than fat. The same weight of muscle take up nearly half
the volume as the same weight of fat.

The problem with this is that not very many people will be able to add
the volume of muscle mass relative to fat lost to gain weight.
Remember, the average man will add only 4 Kg of muscle mass in a
    rigorous training program."

guys, this is the pose i got in class today.

i wish yoga sped up my metabolism more bc it's otherwise awesome. *shakes fist at yoga*

I think that in theory yoga SHOULD speed up your metabolism since it's endurance strength training in essence. Isn't it?

maybe my body is just used to it, but it doesn't do the same for me as riding my bike or running.

  • anyone take any sort of diet pills or fat burners? i am actually just looking for more of a caffeine pill that will increase my energy when i work out to burn more calories. someone recommended "redline" to me.

  • those sound like a terrible idea. just drink a cup of coffee.

you're a science guy, so i'll appeal to your intellect:

According to the ACSM (American College of Sports Medicine), for the average, active teenager or adult who is exercising with the goals of enjoyment and self-improvement, using caffeine defeats these purposes. Although we may feel as though we are increasing our performance, it may be more related to the increase in alertness and energy due to elevated heart rates. Proper training and nutritional habits are more sensible and productive approaches. And these have clear benefits without the side effects.

  • i lost 10 lbs and gained 4 back but now i'm losing again. i only weigh myself about once a month, though. about once a month i get all "i'm really gonna do it, i'm really gonna follow through and exercise and eat healthy for really-real this time". then cut to 2 days later when i'm drinking four loko and eating salt 'n vinegar chips on the couch. it's a continuous cycle of i care/i don't care. it is sort of zen, in its own way.
