Mine too, I'm all boobs!

here's what i remember for healthy weight in health class.
women, at 5' start at 100 lbs. for every inch over 5' add 5 lbs.
for instance, at 5'5, i can be a healthy weight at 125.
men, at 5' start at 105 lbs. for every inch over 5' add 6 lbs.
so and so is 5'9, and at a healthy weight would be 159.
obviously that's not true for all builds and frames, but it's a loose reference.

I have a med/small frame and when I was 125 I looked really skeletal (I'm 5'5). People at my office were actually planning a sit-down to discuss my "weight issue" until I explained to them what I was eating and whatnot. My best friend is 5'4 and weighs 110 and people think we're the same size (people usually guess she's about 15 lbs heavier and I'm about 10-15 lbs lighter.) Its all about how you carry it and your muscle and all that- she actually has a higher bodyfat % than I do even though I weigh 25+ lbs more than her.
So what I'm SAYING is that shooting for something to fit better might be a better goal than shooting for an actual number, especially because it can become really obsessive to try to hit a weight that your body doesn't naturally want.

i also started with small goals, just 10 pounds to start. then after that 5 more, and so on. helps keep your morale up and feels rewarding for when you reach a comfortable, even if not ideal, weight.

to be fair, I lost like 35 lbs in 4-5 months and I didn't go out to eat with anyone at lunch/go drinking with them anymore, etc. I can see how they might think I wasn't eating as they really didn't see me eat very often versus everyone else who was chowin down all the time.

In addition to the body fat and bmi, this one calculates how many calories my body is burning at rest. I find that kind of cool.

i bought that scale last night. i weigh 182 fucking pounds! with a BMI of over 27. to maintain this bodyweight i need to consume almost 3000 calories per day! compare that to 18 months ago when i weighed less than 150. i'm a fat fucking fuck!
but really, i am going to get fit again. my dad has type II diabetes and i don't want to follow in his footsteps.

Jamie what are you doing
ALSO i have a logistical question
can we judge this by body fat percentage lost? for example my BMI is always going to be on the higher side because i'm muscular--and who's to say how much the muscles i gain are going to weigh. i could only lose 10lb and be as skinny as i'm gonna get.
-
secret_robot posted this on January 7th, 2009 @ 1:19:01 pm» quote
- what we need to do (if this is going to be a legit competition) is have a control. for example, a bmi calculator. while the ones online are not totally accurate, it will at least be on the same scale for everyone, so we can compare proportionately. i suggest this [www.nhlbisupport.com], which is just the first thing that comes up when you google bmi calculator. i am 5'6" and weight 138.0 pounds, so this thing says my bmi is 22.3. while that may not be totally on the ball, it will at least have the same eyes for everyone. make sense?

It likes to be around 135-140 and 130 is sort of sustainable but even that is tough if I'm not working out 6 days a week. Its not worth being a nazi about food intake for that 5 extra lbs. I'd like to stay around 135, whereas now I'm hovering around 140. Wearing the same clothes but I'd like them to fit a bit better. I'll use this thread as motivation, although I def won't win.

do you know what the difference between a sprinter and long distance runner are? sprinters have fast-twitch muscles--big calves, big quads, muscular butts. long distance runners have slow-twitch muscles and are generally far leaner. i think it's sort of unbelievable that you guys aren't fucking with me, so that's all i'm going to say about this.

As for fish/proteins, I really like keeping frozen shrimp around. Its healthy and takes 10 minutes to prepare. I defrost it (run cold water over the shrimp) and then sautee them with some combination of the following: garlic, white wine, a small amount of olive oil, shallots, broccoli (or whatever veggie is on hand), lemon, rosemary or whatever fresh herbs are available (I chop the herbs with the garlic so the flavors infuse a little more). Shrimp is relatively high in cholesterol but low in calories/fat.

and, if you are trying to figure out how many calories you require: your weight x 10 = maintenance weight, and then reduce that by 100 calories per day to lose 1lb a week. or something like that.
also also, where the hell did you hear this? that could not possibly be more of a generalization (a pretty inaccurate one at that.)

pull-ups work back and some of your biceps
chin-ups work more biceps and some back
i do 2 sets of each
pull-ups are a lot harder
technically, pull ups and chin ups are supposed to exercise almost the same muscles. the problem is that most people don't do either of them correctly. the main muscle used in pull ups should be your lats. this should be followed up by various muscles in the upper back, shoulders and neck. while you do use your biceps, the load should mostly be held by other muscles.
you can google it to find correct form for them, but off of the top of my head you should arch your back and point your shoulder blades, then pull up at the elbow instead of the wrist. you shouldn't have to wrench the bar if you're doing them correctly.
pull ups and chin ups are awesome and hit a ton of muscles. i like to do them with a neutral or mixed grip to mix it up.

Just to clarify, I'm not saying you should buy the latest fad diet book. What I'm saying is that most of the general public is misinformed when it comes to how this shit works. Polling a bunch of people who have varying degrees of experience and credibility is probably going to fare as well as doing some research from a series of credible sources.

1 pound of muscle = 1 pound of fat
but, regarding density:
Muscle density is 1.06 g/ml and fat density is (about) 0.9
g/ml. Thus, one liter of muscle would weight 1.06 kg and one liter of
fat would weight 0.9 kg. In other words, muscle is about 18% denser
than fat.

Granted...I had a lot more excess fat than others when I started and still want to drop another 20-30 lbs this year.
Something I've been doing the past few months that has been super beneficial has been only eating meat and/or dairy in one meal/day. I've been eating lots of veggies, some beans, some fruit, and some whole grains. Quite cost effective as well.

aaw thanks guys! I was really reticent to post too much anecdotal information here but, honestly, this thread has been motivating for me as well. I had sort of gotten lost in the big picture of the whole endeavor and it was really helpful to set up an intermediate goal.
So...when this thread came into existence I decided I wanted to loose 15 lbs during the contest (its officially done at the end of april, right?). It totally motivated me to work out smarter, keep a better eye on portion size/caloric breakdown, and completely cut out unnecessary calories (mostly booze related but also anything with high fructose corn syrup).
and while I'm certainly no expert, the best advice I can give is to get rid of your old clothes when they get too big. I've been nervous about buying new clothes since I want to loose more weight. I didn't truly realize how much my body has changed until I tried on clothes that actually fit. I had dropped three dress sizes and had *no* idea.

prosciutto wrapped melon.
what about making a trio of salsas/guacamole. Like a basic pico de gallo, a mango salsa, and guac. Serve with veggies and chips. Depending on necessary portions, totally doable for under $20.
Greek yogurt with a bit of honey and dried fruit (cherries are wonderful for this). You can add any combination of flax seed/granola/fresh berries too. Almonds on the side.
canapes with smoked salmon, dill, cucumber, and cream cheese (use grainy bread and do your shot glass trick from the flatbread for presentation!)

this is me about a month ago in "goal" bikini that is still a little too small but oh well.

i've only lost about 13-15 pounds but have significantly improved my muscle tone, which i think is good.

as you get older you get curvier.. being in a high school weight is not gonna be healthy. i would say tone muscle if you wanna tone, but trying to lose 8 more lbs from what your at--you don't need to lose anything.
i weighed 117 when i was 20/21 and i DO NOT need to weigh that little again. i'd rather be 125 and just toned with an actual butt.

thats all a matter of the individual. if someone had some extra pounds in high school and continually gained more throughout the years, going down to high school weight isnt a bad thing.
i weigh less now than in HS and i feel very healthy, hit the gym 3x per week (on a good week). however, im sure i had much more muscle weight in HS due to all the sports i played regularly, which i certainly do not now.

sure, i weigh less now due to my loss of muscle. however, i dont really compare my body now vs then due to many age related reasons as well as health and fitness related reasons (more muscle but worse diet). not comparing does not mean i use my HS self as a minimum weight standard. plus factoring in hormonal stuff, meds (birth control), etc. too many variables.

i read that muscle was about 18% denser than fat, so that visual looks about right.
did you read it... where i posted it in this thread about 2 months ago? :D
fjørd posted this on March 11th, 2009 @ 2:42:15 pm
1 pound of muscle = 1 pound of fat
but, regarding density:
Muscle density is 1.06 g/ml and fat density is (about) 0.9
g/ml. Thus, one liter of muscle would weight 1.06 kg and one liter of
fat would weight 0.9 kg. In other words, muscle is about 18% denser
than fat.

"A corollary to this is that you may gain weight due to lifting
weights, even while loosing fat weight. This is one of the greatest
exercise myths. The myth is based in fact: muscle is more dense and
weighs more than fat. The same weight of muscle take up nearly half
the volume as the same weight of fat.
The problem with this is that not very many people will be able to add
the volume of muscle mass relative to fat lost to gain weight.
Remember, the average man will add only 4 Kg of muscle mass in a
rigorous training program."

those sound like a terrible idea. just drink a cup of coffee.
you're a science guy, so i'll appeal to your intellect:
According to the ACSM (American College of Sports Medicine), for the average, active teenager or adult who is exercising with the goals of enjoyment and self-improvement, using caffeine defeats these purposes. Although we may feel as though we are increasing our performance, it may be more related to the increase in alertness and energy due to elevated heart rates. Proper training and nutritional habits are more sensible and productive approaches. And these have clear benefits without the side effects.
