- worst roomate i ever had was a HUGE d-bag artist who worshiped basquiat. I told him he could hang up some of his artz and I came home from work to find my entire apt covered with shitty pastel on cardboard renderings of half thought out pseudo-profundities including a giant tarp with a 5 year old esque eagle inscribed with "Amerikkka"

I opened his tmobile bill and called everyone on it telling them he had multiple diseases, was a junkie, and was a wanted felon and that they would be held accountable for harboring a d-bag should they see him and not report him to the cops.

well i will agree with you on that too re: knowing the gear/history etc.
i have just seen one to many an asshole take inspiration from the tracy emin school of ~transgressive aestheticism~ and self indulgently think putting a tape recorder in a bag filled with broken glass constitutes a liminal artistic experience destined to shatter our collective paradigm.
Also, i farted on that girl who was asleep in a bed as an "installation" at that new museum exhibit for that artists under 40.

This was a pretty popular argument in freshman year art school theory class.
Also, the people who took Jordan's side were 9 times out of 10 the ones who weren't still making crap 4 years later. At least concerning this:

Sure--but I said "prove to you". You are dismissing someone whose recorded body of work doesn't include an impressionist study. By your logic any musician who can't play Bach is no good.
Also, you're ignoring the fact that his influences are haitian and puerto rican and the diaspora. All art is ethnocentric and if you can't view his work within his cultural parameters, you cannot judge it at all. I can't even say I can properly judge it since my study of African art history was limited to a few measly college courses. But what I do understand of it, I find to be filled with dense and subtle imagery. Not at all naive.

a) i was serious about my suprematist butt cheek.
b) fair enough on basquiat's schooling in the world of african/haitian art.
c) i was never suggesting academic schooling as necessary. Just that the result of pervasive conceptualism in art has meant that really really dumb people can splatter paint on something, half digest a baudriallard book, and convince themselves that they are groundbreaking.
